FLORENCE IN JUNE: WHEN HISTORY COMES ALIVE
Florence in June is an experience not to be missed for history lovers, sports lovers, and event lovers: Florentines relive a tradition which dates back to the Roman Empire period and which sets the scene to an exciting month: the historical soccer matches, played in the original period costumes. Starting the 14th of June four teams play against each other in Piazza Santa Croce to elect the winning team at the finals on the 24th of June, the day Florence dedicates to its patron saint, St. John, which always ends with the famous fireworks (known as "Fochi", from "fuochi", dialect for fire) in Piazzale Michelangelo. Synonym with tradition, June also celebrates the "Medici month", dedicated to one of the most important families which placed Florence in history books: four weeks to enjoy a whole series of plays and stage shows, readings and performances in the most famous places of Firenze, in memory of the de Medici family's ancient splendor.

A Florence you don't expect
Did you know that there is a Florence you’ve probably never seen, never heard of, and never suspected even existed?!
It is the Roman city on which the great Palazzo della Signoria stands – which represents the origins and history of the Florentine republic, and to this day maintains its status as the political hub of the city.
In the undergrounds of « Palazzo Vecchio » - as it is also known - archaeological researches have found the remains of the theatre of Florentia, the fortified Roman city, the traces of which are still recognizable in the central streets of the city. In a short radius of a few hundred meters, a visit can make you visually understand - in a unique and unrepeatable experience - the architectural and historical evolution of the city, from the roman Florentia through the Middle Age, to the Florence of the Renaissance to the Palazzo Vecchio.

Florence discounts
In Florence’s crowded historic center, it can feel like there are as many Americans as locals—and tourism board and province officials want it to stay that way. They were in New York recently to introduce the Fiorino Effect, a series of wide-ranging discounts they hope will keep Americans visiting despite the weak dollar.

The promotion kicks off May 15—timed to the start of Il Genio Fiorentino, a 10-day festival—and runs through December 31. It provides a 10 percent discount at participating hotels and restaurants in Florence and neighboring small towns like Reggello and Barberino Val D’Elsa.

Americans will also get free admission to the Palazzo Medici, a 20 percent discount on exhibits at the Palazzo Strozzi, and a 15 percent discount on performances at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Be sure to mention the Fiorino Effect when booking your hotel room and download the voucher before you go. It has an image of the fiorino (florin), a gold coin introduced in the 1200s by Florentine bankers and that enjoyed a heyday as the preferred currency for trade. The promoters are quick to compare it to the role played by the dollar—for now, anyway.

Florence wants to crack down on illegal parking attendants
After getting tough last month with windshield washers, city officials here would now like to crack down on illegal parking attendants.
According to city security councillor Graziano Cioni, the problem of aggressive parking attendants "is getting worse but unfortunately we do not have adequate means to deal with them".
He added that the issue was now on the agenda of the next meeting of the provincial public security committee.
Data from municipal police showed that while 80 fines were issued between 2003 and 2006 against the illegal parking attendants, 111 had been issued in the first months of this year. "The real problem is that we do not have efficient means to combat this phenomenon," Municipal Police Chief Alessandro Bartolini agreed. Florence used to have only five or six 'historic' parking
attendants, mostly southern Italians, who primarily worked at night and during special events.
